We are anchored in front of some very expensive homes with long docks and large manicured lawns. Relocated a short 34 miles away to anchor on the East side of Kent Island near Mattapex, MD, in Shipping Creek. We have to share the canal with these behemoths tomorrow for 14 miles until we get to Delaware bay!Īuthor dyoungberg Posted on Leave a comment on Day 344 – 346, May 29th – 31st, 2018 Day 342 & 343, May 27th & 28th, 2018 Picture from our anchorage in Chesapeake City harbor shows a huge freighter coming under the bridge in the C&D Canal. We called and coordinate with them and plan to buddy boat with to Cape May NJ tomorrow. We did see another all tan Mainship Trawler named Oar Knot that we remember traveling with two days in a row from Southport NC. First impression will unfortunately stick with us…likely to be traveling together in near future. We didn’t see the boat name since their dinghy was on their transom. We didn’t want to be tied next to someone like that anyway…no Looper flag, but definitely a traveler based on dark stains on the bow of their white Mainship. We asked the folks on the Mainship if they would mind moving up or back a little and the Captain thru his hands up in the air and got very dramatic saying he couldn’t go back any further because of the ferry boats no docking cones placed on the walkway…he expressed he had no interest in moving up either! We said no problem we would be fine anchoring in the harbor.
There would have been plenty of room for us at the free city dock if the older all white Mainship hadn’t taken up most of the dock, leaving no room between him and the small sailboat all the way at the end. We arrived in Chesapeake City and anchored in the harbor. Still good visibility and no winds, so pretty calm crossing the Chesapeake bay heading toward the narrows leading to the Elk river and the entrance of the C&D Canal that connects Chesapeake bay with Delaware bay. Thurs, 5/31: Pushed off by 8:30 and made our way out of Jones Creek to the Patapsco river to see light fog on the bay. We said our goodbyes around 11pm and knew we needed to push off by 8 or so at peak high tide. We were very happy when Chris got home from work and took us over to their favorite spot on the other side of the peninsula off middle river, The New Sue Island Grill and Crab house in Essex MD for their Wednesday night $2 steamed crabs…yum! We are certain to run into them again sooner or later. We picked up a new teak flag pole to replace the one we broke on M/V Viridian bow pulpit at Tangier Island. Wednesday, 5/30: Trudie showed us around the Camden area of Baltimore as we ran errands to West Marine, grocery store etc. Texted pics and talked to Sandy Fitzgerald (in Marathon) so she could help celebrate too! Definitely will be leaving at high tide! Celebrated Trudies birthday at dinner nearby when Chris got home from work. It wasn’t long after low tide so we very carefully backed into tie up finding bottom as we got close enough. Pulled into Jones Creek off the Patapso River and called Trudie to come out to her dock to wave us down. Best Crab cakes yet…tons on lump crab and very little filler! While Greg was doing that, I went into the restaurant and ordered lump Crab cakes dinner special and flounder sandwich special for carryout. We stopped for fuel at Kentmorr marina, pumped out the head, washed the boat down and filled the fresh water tank. Tuesday, 5/29: Greg awoke to the distant sound of fog horns, so no hurry to leave our anchorage to cross the bay.
